The Paton-Churdan Rockets lost both the boys and the girls games to the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders in Coon Rapids Dec. 20.
In the boys game, the Rockets had a 12-0 lead before the Crusaders scored. The second quarter ended with the Rockets leading 12-8. The home team went ahead 24-22 with two minutes to play in the half and at intermission the score was 29-27 for the Crusaders.
The Rockets tied the game at 37 with three minutes to play in the third quarter and the stanza ended with the Rockets up 44-42. The game was tied at 54 with three minutes to play. The Crusaders put up a 3-pointer with just two minutes to play and made two free throws in the last minute. In that time the Rockets made a field goal and the final score was 59-56 for the Crusaders.
Jake Berns and Joe Towers wer the Rockets’ top scorers with 20 points each. Towers’ output included three second half 3-pointers. Chase Juergensen scored seven points, freshman Tyler Miller scored four, Charlie Minnehan scored three points and Trevor Bundt scored two.
The girls lost 47-23 after being behind by only two points, 20-18, at intermission. The Rockets scored only five points in the third quarter and no points in the fourth quarter.
Megan Carey scored 10 points including two 3-point shots, Jenna Beyers scored nine points incuding one 3-pointer, and Grace Geisler scored four, also with a 3-pointer. The team shot at only 19 percent, making two of 21 2-point shots and four of 10 3-point shots. The Rockets made seven of 14 free throws.
Geisler led in rebounds with six.
